Historic Post Office
Located in Madison County, New York, the Historic Post Office in CanastotA is an important historical landmark. Located on the Erie Canal, Canastota grew into a thriving area for agriculture, trade and recreation. Unfortunately, in 1873, the town burned down in a fire that destroyed most of the town’s records.
Before the city became an independent town, it was a hamlet in the hamlet of Chatham. In the late 1880s, Canastota was a rural community with a few farms, but it quickly grew in size. The town grew by three-fifths in a decade. Its population grew to 3,237 in the same time period. By that time, vegetable farming was the main source of agricultural income.
The South Peterboro Street Commercial Historic District is located in Canastota’s historic core. The district’s boundaries are drawn around the old Erie Canal and the Penn Central Railroad. The buildings included in the district are all commercial buildings of sufficient integrity to be listed as historic buildings.
The United States Postal Service nominated the building. The organization worked with the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to prepare a National Register of Historic Places nomination form. The post office was designed by Alfred B. Mullett and constructed in five stories. During its time, it housed the New York Post Office, federal offices, and courtrooms. It was located in City-Hall Park along Broadway Avenue.
