The black and white Shih Tzu is the standard coat color of this breed. This standard coat color allows for entry into conformation shows where the judges will judge the dog on its appearance. Alternate color Shih Tzus are also eligible for registration but are not conformation show eligible.

Piebald

When recognising a black Shihtzu, it is important to know which markings are black and which are white. Piebald Shih Tzus will have more black than white markings. Piebald dogs may also have Irish marks or largely white bodies.

Piebalds will have a blue eye, and may have spotting like Cocker Spaniels. In addition, they will always have a Brindle coat and have two copies of the K gene. The Piebald pattern is less common, but it does exist. Piebald Shih Tzus must have at least one copy of the sp gene from both parents to develop the pattern.
